Governance of EBRAINS

EBRAINS is provided by an international non-profit association (AISBL), headquartered in Brussels, Belgium. It was established in 2019 as an enduring legal entity following the Human Brain Project.

Governance Bodies

EBRAINS AISBL is governed by three bodies, with a fourth structure coordinating the National Nodes:

EBRAINS also has two Advisory Committees, on Science and Technology and on Ethics and Society.

Good Governance Principles

EBRAINS governance follows European principles of good governance, which include:

  • Openness: Sharing information transparently with all stakeholders
  • Participation: Involving stakeholders in decision-making
  • Accountability: Taking responsibility for actions and decisions
  • Effectiveness: Achieving strategic results efficiently
  • Coherence: Ensuring consistent and aligned actions
  • Representation: Ensuring diverse and fair representation in leadership

These principles are detailed in the European Commission’s White Paper on Good Governance (2001).
